Works to improve the junction between Żebbuġ and Siġġiewi in Triq l-Imdina have been completed.
This was announced by Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Aaron Farrugia together with Infrastructure Malta (IM) CEO Ivan Falzon, Projects and Implementation Executive Director Raphael Abdilla, and Implementation Unit Architect Rebecca Grech.
The minister explained that this project alleviated congestion and minimised the risks of accidents on this main route.
He said that this project reduced the average travel time in this area by approximately 30%.
“This improvement in the junction decreased significantly the circumstances in which cars had to cross against each other, and therefore decreased also the risk of accidents. IM also held discussions with the Żebbuġ and Siġġiewi local councils in order to continue refining and improving its plans for this much-awaited project. This project is an example of how, even through infrastructure projects, we are continuing to improve road safety,” Minister Farrugia said.
The agency made sure that this project began operating by the end of September, before schools started.
The agency made a number of amendments in its original plan in order to retain a larger number of trees in the area.
Changes were also made in the original location of the pedestrian crossings and in the segregation of the main road from the adjacent road for more safety on the road, without having a negative impact on the operation of stores and businesses in this area.
The project also included 525 meters of new sidewalks, 435 meters of telecommunications services, moving the existing water services and a new lighting system.
Where possible, the workers carried out necessary works without closing the existing lanes on this road. Works were also carried out at night, in order to reduce the impact on this route during the day.
A controlled pedestrian crossing system will be introduced that crosses the main lanes of Triq l-Imdina, thereby increasing safety for pedestrians.
