PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE PROMOTION: Maltese official appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean

A unanimous decision was taken in Brussels on 28 March 2019 to appoint Ambassador Dr Marisa Farrugia as Deputy Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean responsible for Social and Civil Affairs.

Over these last years, Dr Farrugia has held senior positions both at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion as well as at the Union for the Mediterranean. She was seconded as Special Envoy for the Union for the Mediterranean at the Union’s Secretariat in Barcelona in August 2017. As Deputy Secretary General, she will commence her new role this summer.

Since the inception of the Union for the Mediterranean, the Government of the Republic of Malta consistently extended its support to this regional organisation with the secondment of seasoned diplomats.This decision is another confirmation of the objective of the Government of Malta to continue consolidating its commitment in support of the aims of the Union for the Mediterranean. Likewise, this appointment demonstrates the trust and conviction of other Euro-Mediterraneans in the pivotal role that Malta plays in this region.
