Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela held bilateral talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Stef Blok at the Ministry.

The meeting between Minister Abela and Minister Blok focused on regional matters and multilateral issues, including developments in Libya and relations with the UK post-Brexit.

Minister Carmelo Abela underlined Malta’s commitment to continue forging strong ties with the Netherlands. Bilateral cooperation in various fields of mutual concern such as political, economic, commercial, and trade relations were also discussed. In this sense, the relations between the two countries are based more than just mutual interests but are solidly based on practical cooperation.

On migration, Minister Abela thanked the Government of the Netherlands for showing solidarity in various instances. Minister Abela and Minister Blok spoke about the importance for the EU to find a structured European solution, rather than ad hoc arrangements between EU member states. Referring to the latest case of the migrants stranded on board Sea Watch 3, both ministers, while welcoming the resolution of the matter, agreed that more needs to be done to have a holistic EU approach based on a balance of responsibilities and solidarity.
