PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE PROMOTION Strengthening bilateral relations during the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

In New York, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela met with the Foreign Minister of the State of Palestine Riyad al-Maliki to discuss current developments in the region and global challenges.

The minister reiterated Malta’s unwavering support for any initiative that aims to breathe new life in the process of establishing peace in the region.

In separate bilateral meetings, together with his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Minister Abela signed an Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between Malta and Armenia ensuring that enterprises based in either country and doing business with each other will not have to pay taxes on their income in both jurisdictions.

Minister Abela also signed a protocol with Mongolian Minister for Foreign Affairs Damdin Tsogtbaatar paving the way for future bilateral consultations between the two countries.

Also in New York, Minister Abela attended the EU Foreign Ministers Meeting where discussions focused on the ongoing situation in Libya. Minister Abela noted that Malta supports the initiatives led by UN Special Envoy Ghassam Salame, highlighting that the situation in Libya can only be improved if action is encouraged, supported and enacted at the highest international level.

Minister Abela met with Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean Nasser Kamel, highlighting pressing realistic challenges of climate change effects in the Mediterranean.

Minister Abela also attended the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development where Heads of State and Government were able to review progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Goals.
