PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS: Minister Vella in first Malta-Kyrgyz Republic bilateral meeting

Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella yesterday evening held discussions with the Foreign Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Abdyldaev Erlan Bekeshovich, in Brussels. The bilateral talks took place following a Cooperation Council Meeting between the EU and the Kyrgyz Republic, chaired by Minister Vella.

The two Ministers expressed their satisfaction at the possibility of holding first-ever direct discussions at their level, and agreed that this was a first step in taking forward bilateral exchanges in the coming months. Minister Vella stated that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993, contacts were mainly upheld through regional and multilateral frameworks such as the EU, United Nations, and the OSCE. He referred to the possible avenues of cooperation in the fields of commerce, trade, tourism and education. Minister Vella also encouraged the Kyrgyz Republic to continue contributing to regional stability in Central Asia.

Minister Erlan Bekeshovic, on his part, thanked Minister Vella for having chaired the Cooperation Council Meeting earlier in the day, and for having conveyed messages of motivation to the Kyrgyz Republic. Malta was congratulated on the priority goals identified for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Minister Bekeshovic spoke of the willingness in Bishkek to consolidate relations with Malta on the political and economic fronts, pointing out that the two countries are gateways to their respective regions. Minister Vella was invited to visit the Kyrgyz Republic for official talks
