PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS – Minister Vella meets Ambassador-designate of Cape Verde to Malta

Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella received the Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Cape Verde to Malta Manuel Amante da Rosa, who will be presenting his credentials to President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Thursday 23 March 2017.

In welcoming the Ambassador-designate, the Minister noted the similarities that exist between Malta and Cape Verde in terms of population size, with both countries having a large diaspora of nationals living abroad, and having limited natural resources. Minister Vella underlined the need to explore new areas of cooperation in a number of diverse sectors such as education, maritime matters (including ship registration), tourism, and the environment. Both sides also agreed on the need to enhance trade relations and exchanges, as well as tourism between the two countries.

Minister Vella underlined the importance of assisting developing small states. In this regard, the Minister also gave an outline of the Development Centre for Small States of the Commonwealth which was launched during CHOGM 2015, and which will be based in Malta, offering expertise and credit at preferential rates to small states, including non-Commonwealth countries like Cape Verde.

The Minister and the Ambassador-designate also exchanged views on migration. In this regard, Minister Vella expressed his appreciation for the high-level delegation of Cape Verde to the Valletta Summit, which was headed by President of the Republic of Cape Verde Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca in November 2015, as well as the Valletta Follow-up Senior Officials’ meeting that was recently held in Malta on 8 and 9 February 2017.

In expressing his appreciation for the discussions held with the Minister, Ambassador-Designate Manuel Amante da Rosa stated that he looked forward to strengthening the bilateral ties between Malta and Cape Verde, and agreed on the need to increase high-level meetings between both countries.

On the 27th of this month, Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella will be meeting Cape Verde’s Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Tavares in Malta.
