PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AND EUROPEAN AFFAIRS Malta and France discuss recent developments in the Mediterranean

State Secretary for European Affairs of the French Republic Clément Beaune and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo discussed recent developments in the Mediterranean and the situation in Libya, especially in light of the upcoming elections.

Minister Bartolo spoke about the need to strengthen EU-Libya relations, stressing that it is mutually beneficial to have security and development in Libya. The issue of migration was also discussed, and the two ministers agreed that there needs to be strategic coordination between countries.

The talks also focused on the work of the upcoming French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with both Ministers touching upon the importance of the EU-Africa Summit to be held in February 2022. Both sides agreed that partnership with African countries on development and economic opportunities is important.

Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi attended the meeting.
