PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR JUSTICE, CULTURE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Collaboration with Malta Fashion Week on a series of international fashion shows

As part of the legacy of the Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture project, the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA), which falls within the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, has continued the collaboration with Malta Fashion Week (MFW) via eight international fashion shows and networking events.

These elements of the MFW will form part of the VCA’s Cultural Programme and will create an opportunity for young, emerging local fashion designers to meet internationally acclaimed ones in order to network and exchange ideas for future collaborations. This collaboration is aimed to further strengthen the capacity-building experience of MFW, while enabling the continuous professional development of local creatives.

“Each year, we are witnessing an ever-growing cultural calendar, which is full of many different aspects of our culture and traditions. The Malta Fashion Week is definitely an event that members of the public look forward to, as it has been steadily gaining more popularity with each edition, presenting us with a showcase and platform for established designers, as well as young and emerging ones to cultivate and display their talents and artistry. It is thanks to such events that we further ensure to make culture and its many different elements more accessible to our society,” said Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici.

VCA Chairman Jason Micallef said, “The Valletta Cultural Agency will continue to build on the legacy of the Valletta 2018 Foundation by collaborating in high calibre cultural events, such as Malta Fashion Week, which is a boon to the local creative and cultural sector.”

The events which the VCA is collaborating on will take place in Valletta and will include internationally-acclaimed designers, such as Agatha Ruiz De La Prada (Spain), Architecture in Fashion (Switzerland), Chidinma Obairi (Nigeria), Khan (Russia), Jason Grech (Australia), Ocantos (Argentina), Milica Trickovic (Serbia), Eymeric Francois (France) and Sanja (Slovenia). An exchange in designers is also being organised by MFW in collaboration with Serbia Fashion Week which is held in Novi Sad, with Novi Sad being European Capital of Culture in 2021.

Various fashion events will be taking place at Fort St Elmo in Valletta. MFW 2019 runs from Wednesday 22nd till Wednesday 29th May. The awards will be held on Friday 31st May at Pjazza Tritoni. More information on
