PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR JUSTICE, CULTURE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Magic in Strada Stretta

The macabre, the paranormal and magic will be the theme of Macabaret, a cabaret style spectacle to be staged for one night only in Strada Stretta. Macabaret is a Strada Stretta Concept event which forms part of the Valletta Cultural Agency’s Cultural Programme for 2019, which falls within the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government.

Through the Valletta Cultural Agency, we are able to provide more high quality events in our vibrant capital city which has become a cultural hub over the past couple of years. This is possible thanks to carefully thought out strategies which aim to provide our society with cultural and artistic events all year round. The Macabaret is a unique addition to this year’s cultural calendar, as we aim to ensure that our cultural calendar contains something for everyone, said Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici during the launch of the Strada Stretta Concept event.

The audience will experience a night of spiritual presences, sword swallowers, magic performances, experiments in psychic powers, and much more.

Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef said that, through a varied annual programme for Strada Stretta, we will continue to contribute to this iconic street’s cultural life; a street which has so much character, entertainment and history to offer in Valletta. The Strada Stretta Concept began as a Valletta 2018 project, therefore its continuity is an integral part of the European Capital of Culture’s legacy which is being kept alive by the VCA. Next year’s programme will explore several artistic forms with a modern perspective, including opera, contemporary art, cinema, theatre, music and literature.

Based on the format of a traditional cabaret show, Macabaret will involve the spooky and the sensational, thought in an original cabaret ambience that recalls the spirit of Strada Stretta. It promises to entertain with the mysterious, the bizarre, and an added layer of tongue in cheek humour. The performance will include a series of scenes with a rather macabre character, including ‘The Spirits Return’, ‘Psychic Powers’, ‘Human Endurance’, ‘Ethereal Feats’.

Vanni Pule will be the protagonist of Macabaret, accompanied by a troupe of magical performers: the young and talented Gwilym Bugeja, sword swallower Alexander, and the fascinating Sarah Kurvinen, with Enrico Zerafa Caruso as stagehand.

Strada Stretta Concept Coordinator Nikki Petroni said that, “the Strada Stretta Concept has returned as part of the programme of the newly established Valletta Cultural Agency, with Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci once again appointed as artistic director. The project will continue to produce high quality artistic and cultural events in Strada Stretta, building on the history and character of this area of the capital city. For the November event, death has to come into the picture, but with a difference. Magic, death and the macabre will be the central elements of Strada Stretta’s Macabaret.”

The performance will take place on Wednesday 6th November at 8.30pm at The Thirsty Lawyer, located at The Gut, Strait Street, Valletta. Entrance is free; however, it is recommended to book on info@thethirstylawyer.com due to limited seating.
