PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR SOCIAL DIALOGUE, CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES: Legal Notice issued through the Employment and Industrial Relations Act on leave for medically assisted procreation

Minister Helena Dalli announced the introduction of special leave for prospective parents undergoing the process of medically assisted procreation, known as IVF.

Through this measure, the couple will be entitled to one hundred hours of leave with full pay between them, that is paid by the employer. This leave entitlement will be granted for a maximum of three processes for medically assisted procreation, whether in Malta or outside Malta.

This entitlement can be utilised at any time during the process of medically assisted procreation, and is portioned at sixty hours for the prospective parent receiving the embryo implant, and 40 hours for the other parent. Leave can be availed of simultaneously by the prospective parents, and it can be availed of continuously or in hours.

This leave entitlement is accessible to couples under Legal Notice 156 of 2017 issued through the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (Cap 452).
