PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE: Minister Joe Mizzi attends IHO Assembly in Monaco

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Joe Mizzi attended the 1st Session of the first IHO Assembly in Monaco on Monday 24th April 2017, following the amendments to the IHO Convention.

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is the inter-governmental consultative and technical organization, whose principal aim is to ensure that all the world’s seas, oceans, and navigable waters are adequately surveyed and charted. The Organization has been based in the Principality of Monaco since 1921, where it provides the international standards for hydrography and nautical charting, as well as ensures co-operation between countries in support of navigation safety at sea and the sustainable development of their maritime environment.

Prince Albert II of Monaco opened the Assembly. Dignitaries attending the event included Secretary-General for the IMO Mr Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the WMO Dr Petteri Taalas, and Secretary-General of the ISA Michael Lodge. Seventy eight countries with over three hundred delegates attended the Assembly.

Minister Joe Mizzi attended the event on the occasion of Malta joining the Organization as a full member, and presented the Maltese flag on behalf of the Maltese delegation. In his speech, the Minister highlighted Malta’s achievements and commitments in the maritime sector, and stated that Malta will continue to contribute and meet its international obligations to contribute to the safety of navigation.
