PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAPITAL PROJECTS

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius welcomed to the Ministry the Malta Developers Association on the occasion of the setting up of a new technical team within this association.

This technical team, which holds within it a substantial number of professionals, including architects, will have a consultative role within this association. The aim of setting up this team is also so that these professionals can work in a technical way on several proposals related to the property market and development.

During this meeting, one of the team members, Stephen Farrugia, gave a presentation of the first proposal this team worked on, that of affordable housing, which will be proposed to the government.

Minister Borg commended this initiative by the association in light of the fact that the technical experience and innovative ideas that this team can contribute will have an important role for this industry. He spoke about how this industry is currently experiencing a boom and several changes, and it is therefore even more necessary for such professionals to give their contribution in a constructive manner for the benefit of society.

Borg said that in the case of affordable housing, the government must work hard and be creative, in such a way that we make the best possible use of the property and land we already have, with the aim of being sustainable while doing everything that is possible so that more Maltese and Gozitan families and couples can become home owners.

Parliamentary Secretary Agius spoke about the Government’s initiatives to help these same couples and families to reach this aim, including the first-time buyers and second-time buyers schemes and the reduction on duty when purchasing a property in an urban conservation area or in Gozo. However, Agius said that we are still not reaching enough couples and families, and it is therefore necessary for the government to work towards more affordable housing.

Malta Developers Association President Sandro Chetcuti spoke about how important it is that development and the property market are not detrimental to anyone, but rather reach a point where both the developer and the buyer can gain from this market.
