PRESS RELEASE BY THE NATIONAL AUDIT OFFICE: Official visit at the National Audit Office by Mr Leo Brincat, the Maltese member of the European Court of Auditors

Mr Leo Brincat, the Maltese Member at the European Court of Auditors (ECA), paid an official visit to the National Audit Office (NAO). He was accompanied by various ECA officials, including Spokesman for the ECA Mark Rogerson and members of his team.

Mr Brincat was welcomed at the NAO by the Auditor General Charles Deguara, the Deputy Auditor General Noel Camilleri, as well as other senior officials. During their meeting, Mr Brincat conveyed his appreciation to the Maltese National Audit Office for the excellent working relationship that exists between both institutions. He also referred to ongoing initiatives within the court on which he was presently working including high priority reports related to key migration issues and an audit evaluation of effectiveness of European Funds for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the Juncker Investment Plan for Europe. From his end, Mr Deguara thanked Mr Brincat for this visit and emphasised that ultimately both institutions had an identical mission and objective, namely that of providing assurance that taxpayers’ monies were being utilised in the best manner possible and in line with prevailing financial rules and regulations.

During his visit to Malta, Mr Brincat will make the keynote presentation at a seminar with the theme of ‘Public Audit in the Digital Age’ which, considering the impressive technological developments in areas such as blockchain and Artificial Intelligence, is an extremely topical subject. This annual seminar is organised jointly by the European Court of Auditors and the National Audit Office for senior officials and auditors of the NAO and the Internal Audit and Investigations Department within the Office of the Prime Minister. Permanent Secretaries, the CEO and senior officers from the Malta Information Technology Agency, and Chief Information Officers from across the public service will participate in this seminar.
