PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT President receives Minister of the Interior of Italy Luciana Lamorgese on a courtesy call

President of Malta George Vella received Minister of the Interior of Italy Luciana Lamorgese at Sant’ Anton Palace this afternoon.

In thanking President Vella for receiving her, Minister Lamorgese expressed her satisfaction at the outcome of a Ministerial Meeting on Migration held in Malta during the course of the day. She added that due to the arrangement reached in Malta, one could hope for a solution to the issue of relocation at a European Union level. Malta and Italy can no longer shoulder the responsibility of arrivals on their own.

President Vella commended the work carried out by the Maltese authorities and all those involved in reaching an agreement during the Migration Ministerial Meeting, and underlined the important positive impact that this could have in implementing European solidarity, once its provisions come into effect. He stated that Malta was among the first EU Member States that called for a balanced and fair solution to the migration phenomenon on the Central Mediterranean route.

Today’s courtesy call on President Vella was held only a few days following his meeting with the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella which took place on 17 September in Rome, during which the two heads of state reiterated the importance they attach to the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries and the emphasis they made on the subject of migration.
