PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT: The President meets with the foreign minister of Libya, Najla El Mangoush

The latest developments in Libya were discussed between President George Vella and the Libyan Foreign Minister Najla El Mangoush at San Anton Palace in Attard.

During the exchange, President Vella recalled Malta’s continued commitment to a stable country that builds a sound democratic future for its people. The present political instability is a cause for concern not only for the Libyan people themselves but also for the region more broadly. President Vella encouraged all entities and stakeholders to seek dialogue and find a durable solution to the longstanding crisis through elections. Malta, President Vella added, has never relented on its calls to the international community to keep Libya as a priority among other pressing global dossiers.

From her end, Minister El Mangoush gave a detailed overview of unfolding events, describing the present situation as a stalemate and a heavily-polarised scenario. She referred to international pressures in different directions that were not conducive to any stability. The minister also stated that the government has increased its efforts to find a way to reconciliation and a change to a more positive narrative, but these keep being hampered. The proliferation of militias continues to make the situation very dangerous and complex.

Minister El Mangoush congratulated Malta on being elected to the UN Security Council and added that this would in no small measure help in addressing Mediterranean issues.
