PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER: Joseph Muscat meets Michel Barnier before the EU Council receives UK’s formal request to trigger Article 50

This is a sad day but now we have to move forward on what relationship we want with the United Kingdom. We will move ahead.

Joseph Muscat made these remarks while welcoming the European Chief Negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier, a few hours before the European Council receives the United Kingdom’s formal request to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

The Prime Minister thanked Mr Barnier for this visit and informed him that once the letter is received triggering Brexit officially, a statement will be issued. After forty-eight hours, draft guidelines to the negotiations will be issued.

The Prime Minister reiterated that he wanted a fair deal for everyone.

Chief Negotiatior Michel Barnier described this day as day one of a very difficult road whilst reiterating his confidence in the Presidency and the European Council. He said that everyone wants to succeed in this new path.
