PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER :Speaker An?lu Farrugia opens the Meeting of the Chairpersons of Economic and Environmental Affairs Committees

On 7 April 2017, the Speaker of the House of Representatives An?lu Farrugia opened the Meeting of the Chairpersons of Economic and Environmental Affairs Committees, organised within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In his address, Speaker Farrugia explained that the aim of this meeting was to engage Members of Parliament in discussions on dealing with the phenomenon of climate change not from a purely environmental perspective but also from an economic opportunity point of view. Speaker Farrugia added that as legislators and as representatives of citizens, parliamentarians must work closely to discuss the economic and social impact of climate change not only for this generation but also for the generations to come, especially the difference between taking action and not taking any action at all.

By way of example Speaker Farrugia explained that the new Parliament building has been designed to be as highly energy efficient as possible through the installation of photovoltaic cells on its roof, sun deflecting structures around windows and a heat exchange mechanism that stores cold air in winter to be used in the hot months of the year. He added that although these came at a considerable initial cost, these would be outweighed by the long-term benefits.

In conclusion Speaker Farrugia urged all Chairpersons and Members of Parliament present, as representatives of the citizens, to always consider the impact of each decision taken in the respective parliaments on the future generations.

This meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives Mr Silvio Schembri.
