PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Speaker Farrugia receives Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Baowen

Speaker An?lu Farrugia received a courtesy visit by Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Baowen.

Following a tA�te-A�-tA�te, the two dignitaries referred to the friendly relations between Malta and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatically 45 years ago, in January 1972. These relations have enhanced following a number of high-level visits including Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC Yu Zhengsheng’s visit to Malta just last year.

Both parties discussed issues of mutual interest, particularly the increase in cooperation between the respective parliaments. The Speaker reiterated his proposal regarding the setting up of a Parliamentary Friendship Group between the two countries in order to enhance the Sino-Maltese relationship.

Vice-Chairman Baowen agreed with the Speaker’s proposal on enhancing parliamentary cooperation and suggested this to be done at a committee level.

Mr Speaker was accompanied by Deputy Speaker ?ensu Galea, Michael Falzon and Frederick Azzopardi. Clerk of the House Ray Scicluna was also present.

Mr Baowen, who is also the Chairman of the Central Committee of China Democratic League and Vice-President of the Chinese Association for International Understanding (CAFIU), was accompanied by Vice-President of CAFIU, Member of CPPCC National Committee Ai Ping, and Secretary General of CAFIU Ni Jian, Mr Liu Changli and Mr Wang Chengjun, Council members of CAFIU. Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malta Jiang Jiang was also present.
