PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe pays a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives

President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Pedro Agramunt paid a courtesy visit to Speaker of the House of Representatives An?lu Farrugia.

The two dignitaries discussed various themes of mutual interest such as migration and the humanitarian crisis in various countries, especially Syria; the threat to European values due to the rise of populism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia; social inequality and inclusion; the rights of minorities and human rights in general; and the functioning of democratic institutions in certain countries facing particular challenges.

Speaker Farrugia and President Agramunt also made reference to the importance of the Rome Declaration, signed last Saturday by the leaders of the 27 member states and EU institutions. Speaker Farrugia highlighted the fact that the signatories of the declaration emphasised the need of a “Union that is safe and secure, prosperous, competitive, sustainable and socially responsible”, as well as a “Union where citizens have new opportunities for cultural and social development and economic growth.”

President Agramunt was accompanied by Senior Adviser Jorge Mestre and Personal Assistant Greta Faggiani. Joe Debono Grech MP was also present.
