PRESS RELEASE BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR THE EU PRESIDENCY 2017 AND EU FUNDS: Malta Police Force to benefit from over Euros 56,000 in EU funding

The Parliamentary Secretariat for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds has announced that the Malta Police Force (MPF) will be benefiting from over Euros 75,000-of which Euros 56,250 will be financed through the EU Internal Security Fund (ISF)-for the procurement of forensic equipment.

The project includes the purchase of handheld devices to detect and identify different substances and narcotics as well as the provision of related training to personnel. By means of such equipment, the MPF will be better equipped to combat organised crime and other areas of illegal activities.

Malta will be investing around Euros 100 million under the ISF to aid internal security and border controls. Parliamentary Secretary Borg declared that further projects are in the pipeline for implementation under this fund, and will be approved later this year. The main objective of these projects is to improve Malta’s security mechanisms. These projects will complement, and build upon, other actions implemented under previous Funds.

Ian Borg expressed words of recognition for the work carried out by the Funds and Programme Division and the administration of the Police, who, through their joint efforts, have been and will continue to implement important projects in the field of internal security.
