PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE MINISTRY FOR SOCIAL DIALOGUE, CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES

Malta supports the collaboration between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the EU for enhancing the safety and security of radioactive material worldwide – Minister Helena Dalli

Delegates from nineteen different countries together with experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are currently attending a workshop organised by the IAEA in Malta about radiation.

This workshop focuses on managing the radioactive sources in compliance with the code of conduct on the safety and security of radioactive sources and guidance on the import and export of radioactive sources. It also focuses on ensuring their safety and security during import and export between Member States.

During her opening address, Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties Helena Dalli said that Malta supports the collaboration between the IAEA and the European Union for enhancing the safety and security of radioactive material worldwide.

Helena Dalli said that the government is currently undertaking a major review of its regulatory framework in light of the 2015 Integrated Regulatory Review Service mission to Malta.

“Malta’s strategic position in the Mediterranean means that a lot of cargo is trans-shipped, especially through Malta Freeport, necessitating systems in place which monitor most of this cargo for radioactivity using sophisticated equipment”, stated Minister Dalli.

Minister Dalli said that, through this workshop, delegates will learn ways of enhancing their own national regulatory systems which will not only be a benefit to their country but also to the wider international community.

The workshop is being also attended by representatives of the Radiation Protection Board within the Occupational Health and Safety Authority together with the Customs Department.

Throughout the past years, Malta has received continuous support from the International Atomic Energy Agency on the use and regulation of sources of radiation.
