PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT: President Coleiro Preca meets the CEOs of ‘War Child’ and ‘Save the Children’

During her official visit to the UK, President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca met CEO of ‘War Child’ Rob Williams, and CEO of ‘Save the Children’ Kevin Watkins,.

‘War Child’ is a non-governmental organisation founded in the UK in 1993, which provides assistance to children in areas experiencing conflict, and the aftermath of conflict. The establishment of ‘War Child’ UK was soon followed by organisations in Canada and the Netherlands.

‘Save the Children’ is an international non-governmental organization that promotes children’s rights, provides relief, and helps support children in developing countries. It was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 in order to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, wars, and other conflicts.

Recent data has shown that children constitute up to 38% of the migrants in Greece to have arrived in the European Union since January 2016. Many of these children are unaccompanied, or have been separated from their families. This data, together with the current situation in Europe, in areas such as Calais in France, were discussed during the President’s meetings with Mr Williams and Mr Watkins.

In light of the fact that Malta will be at the helm of the Presidency of the European Council, ‘Missing Children Europe’ will be holding a conference in Malta in January 2017.

The President of Malta, who is also a member of the Patron’s Council of Missing Children Europe, took the initiative to suggest that this conference be held in Malta.

This conference will bring together European and international experts and policy makers on missing asylum-seeking children and missing refugee children, such as ‘War Child’ and ‘Save the Children’, to discuss the current situation in the region which, according to Europol, shows that in 2015 alone, 10,000 asylum-seeking children have been reported missing.

This conference is being organised in collaboration with the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society.
