PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Speaker of the House of Representatives pays courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Bulgaria

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malta An?lu Farrugia, paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr Rosen Asenov Plevneliev, at San Anton, Attard.

The two dignitaries referred to the strong political relations that exist between Malta and the Republic of Bulgaria, which diplomatic relations were established on 10th September 1971. They underlined the various exchanges of high level visits as well as the number of bilaterel agreements which have enhanced these relations.

Speaker Farrugia and President Plevneliev mentioned that Valletta will be the European Capital of Culture in 2018, while the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv will be the European Capital of Culture in 2019. They highlighted the importance of co-operation between the Parliaments of the two countries.

Reference was also made to Malta’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with Speaker Farrugia elaborating on the priorities on which the said Presidency will be focusing.

The President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Rosen Asenov Plevneliev, was accompanied by Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Malta Marin Raykov, Foreign Policy Secretary to the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Ms Denica Zheleva, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr Rumen Alexandrov, Director of Protocol of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr Ivan Kondov , Head, Press Office Department, Office of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria,Mr Veselin Ninov, and Mrs Ermelina Peycheva, Bilateral European Co-operation Directorate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Bulgaria.

Mr Ancel Farrugia Migneco, Personal Assistant to the Speaker; Miss Eleanor Scerri, Director International Relations, (HoR); Mr Peter Paul Mallia, Director, (HoR); and Mr Giovanni Miceli, Adviser International Relations, (HoR), accompanied the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the meeting.
