Some 98 Percent of Farmland Covered with Seeds in Amhara Region of Ethiopia


Addis Ababa: Some 98 percent of farmland has been covered with various crop seeds in Amhara Region out of the planned 5.1 million hectares to be cultivated during this farming season, according to Region’s Rural Cluster Coordinator with the rank of regional vice president and head of Agriculture Bureau, Dresse Sahilu.

Dresse told ENA that the region has been working to cultivate 5.1 million hectares of farmland during the current farming season.

He said so far 98 percent of the farmland has been covered with various types of crop seeds out of the planned 5.1 million hectares.

This year, the farmers have been provided with sufficient agricultural inputs, fertilizer and seeds more than the previous years, Dresse stated.

Hence, the region expects to harvest some 169 million quintals of crops, he added.

Some 6.9 million quintals of fertilizer has been distributed to the farmers so far and more fertilizer will also be transported to the region, Dresse noted, emphasizing the enhanced agricultural mechani
zation and cluster farming systems particularly on wheat, maize and barley crops with increased productivity from year to year.
