STATEMENT BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES AND ANIMAL RIGHTS: The Maltese agricultural product accepted positively in Japan

Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Clint Camilleri is these days to attend the 44th edition of the international exhibition FOODEX 2019, Tokyo of Japan, where it is accompanied by Ambassador to Malta Andre Spiteri. The expo see the participation of 90 different countries and is regarded as one of the largest fairs organized related to food and drinks inside Asia.

This visit is made with a view to establishing bilateral contacts on the basis of business and identified the possibility of trade between the two countries, particularly related to the export of pork and vegetables such as potatoes, onions and tomatoes .

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri attended the official opening of this international fair which among others had discussions with the Minister of State Agriculture and Fisheries of Japan Yashuiro Ozato, Director General of DG Agri of the European Union Jerzi Bogdan Plewa, and EU Ambassador Patricia Flor in Japan.

During this visit, the Parliamentary Secretary had meetings with various business entities specializing in importing quality products which explained how the Maltese product has features and characteristics that distinguish it from other products, even those sold European markets. This coupled with the fact that recently came into force EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, which is intended to strengthen trade between the EU and Japan, can make it possible in the future some Maltese products are can enter the Japanese market.
