THE MINISTRY FOR ENERGY, ENTERPRISE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A 9 million euro investment in Malta from Medichem Group

Medichem Group, a Spanish pharmaceutical company with two factories in Malta, is investing a total of €9 million in expanding its operations to reach new markets while continuing to offer quality jobs.

During a visit to the factory in Hal Far by the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli and Chief Executive Officer of Malta Enterprise Kurt Farrugia, the Chief Executive Officer of Medichem Group, Elisabeth Stampa explained that the company invested €3 million to diversify its operations. Investment in manufacturing capacity will continue to increase by a further €6 million.

Medichem Group employs 100 people in Malta, with the number expected to increase by 10% in the coming months.

The €3 million investment was made in specialized equipment to enable it to manufacture innovative products while strengthening its equipment and infrastructure. Among the medicines it produces in Malta are those against cancer and against thrombosis. Investment in new tablet bottling equipment will also help the company enter the US market – a market that uses different distribution systems than those used in Europe.

Minister Miriam Dalli explained that this company has not only invested in infrastructure but has invested in the health and safety of employees.

“It is gratifying to see companies like Medichem Group expand their operations. As a government, we are committed to continuing to support companies in investing in the training and skills of their employees. We believe that as a company grows and expands, the workers must keep up”, said Minister Dalli.

Medichem Group is looking forward to continuing to invest in larger capacity manufacturing in the coming years. With an investment of another €6 million, the company is looking to strengthen factories and equipment. This growth will lead to an increase in employment – especially in manufacturing and testing areas – where they are seeing up to five times the amounts they produce today.

Minister Miriam Dalli said that despite the pandemic, this government continued to incentivise more businesses to continue to grow and diversify. She said that this government is committed to continuing assisting and supporting these companies for the coming years, as it has been doing since the beginning of the pandemic until now.

“All our successes are the result of the fantastic work of our talented and committed team in Malta. With great satisfaction, we can say that from the very beginning of our operations in Malta, we have had the full support and guidance of the Maltese government and Malta Enterprise both for the creation and maintenance of high quality and sustainable employment and for our projects and our growth become a reality. We have only words of gratitude”, said Elisabeth Stampa.

Kurt Farrugia said, “Malta Enterprise is proud to support Medichem groups next ventures as they take on new markets. Given the challenges of innovation, we are aware of the fact that continued R&D progress requires robust support and cooperative efforts from the government. Saying that, the local pharmaceutical industry is currently characterized by a phase of change and opportunity, rather than just a phase of growth. It is characterised with ambition and big plans such as those witnessed here that makes us confident of the industry in the local environment”.
