During a bilateral meeting between Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta Ian Borg and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana Shirley Ayokor Botchewy, the two countries signed a number of cooperation agreements through which the relationship between the two countries will continue to be strengthened.
Cooperation will be taking place in the fishing, youth and sports sectors, among others.
Minister Borg, during this meeting, said that the two countries enjoy a long bilateral relationship and the inauguration of the High Commission is testimony to all this. During this meeting, he had the opportunity to explain in detail Malta’s priorities as a member of the United Nations Security Council. “Malta aims to contribute to the maintenance of peace and security,” the minister said.
Minister Shirley Ayokor Botchewy said that today is an important one that continues to show the commitment of the two countries. She stressed that she looks forward for these agreements to come into force for the benefit of both people. Minister Botchewy also thanked the Maltese government for the donation of more than 130,000 COVID vaccines during the pandemic.
During this visit, Minister Borg also had a meeting with Minister for Trade of Ghana Michael Okyere Baafi. Dr Borg explained how Ghana remains a priority country when it comes to trade for Maltese and Gozitan companies, so much so that there are already around 24 companies that are exporting to this country, with an average of €28 million in products.
Minister Borg went on to say how the effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (afCFTA) will continue to increase business opportunities, particularly in the manufacturing and e-commerce sectors.
The Minister explained and went into detail about the economic niches that the country is working on to continue growing, in particular with Maltese and Gozitan businesses. He went on to say that the visit of more than 50 businessmen also resulted in a stronger collaboration in the field of trade.
Minister Ian Borg also had a meeting with Ambassador of the European Union to Ghana Irchad Ramiandrasoa Razaaly, in which the relations between the EU and this country were discussed.
Among other meetings, the Maltese delegation also met with the National Fire Service of Ghana, the National Lotteries Agency and the Ghana Freezone Authority.
