Malta was elected to the United Nations Security Council by 185 votes, which means 97.3% of the casted votes. Therefore, our country will now have a seat in this Council for a term of two years, from 2023 to 2024, and is one of two European countries elected.
Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg said that this is a historic day for Malta since United Nations members have shown confidence in Malta’s foreign policy, principles and priorities.
Minister Borg thanked all the countries that have entrusted this responsibility in our country also in view of the fact that Malta believes in the need for international peace. He went on to say that Malta truly embraces and will continue to safeguard the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
“We are determined to contribute towards preserving multilateral processes and building the confidence and political will needed to meet the challenges we face today. As staunch supporters of multilateralism, we have fundamental interest to maintain international order based on the important rule, that power and potency do not prevail over the rule of law. This is vital for everyone, including small states such as Malta”, said Minister Borg.
Malta will be following three important principles: security, sustainability and solidarity. “In our term in this Council we will seek to continue pushing forward issues such as child protection, the threat of climate change, the importance of literacy as a way of overcoming conflicts, and the important role of women among others”, reiterated the minister.
Ian Borg thanked Maltese Ambassador Vanessa Frazier and her team who have been constantly working and negotiating so that our country could achieve this prestigious result.
