Invitation to bid for the installation of renewable energy upto 1MW
The Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) together with the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise has launched a bid for private investors to submit their offers to develop large renewable energy installations. This process is being launched for the second consecutive year, for renewable energy projects such as solar farms and wind turbines.
The regulator is opening the bid for systems with a capacity starting from 40kWp (kilowatt peak) of a maximum of 1MWp (megawatt peak).
In a conference addressed by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli and the CEO of REWS, Ing. Marjohn Abela, the government presented this year’s plan.
Through the new scheme, if the allocation is taken in full, the government will offer financial support for private investors to generate enough clean energy for around 6,000 households, translating into some 10,000 tons less of carbon dioxide in a year.
Minister Miriam Dalli explained that through this scheme, the government will invest up to a maximum of €74 million in clean energy over 20 years.
“We are working to increase the sources of renewable energy in our country, which investment will help us strengthen security of supply and diversification in energy generation. This will contribute to new economic opportunities and more green jobs. This complements our country’s vision for a decarbonised economy by 2050,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.
These investments will help Malta and Gozo address several sustainable development goals, including SDG7, SDG9, SDG12 and SDG13.
Through a similar scheme launched last year, 36 projects were attracted. These systems will be generating clean energy with a maximum capacity of 10 megawatts. This means that these systems will generate enough electricity for around 4,200 homes, so that our country saves 7,000 tons of carbon dioxide every year.
Ing. Marjohn Abela explained how the Government Notice for this year’s new scheme provides for five calls (ITB) for the grant on electricity generated from renewable energy sources of generation from 40kW to less than 200kW, and from 200kW to less than 1mW respectively. “Each call for the allocation of aid includes a call for each category,” explained Ing. Abela. “The capacity available for the grant, thus calculated, will be published in the ITB document of each respective call. The government can review the methodology used to calculate the capacities available for the allocation of aid.”
