THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAPITAL PROJECTS Valletta Region Sustainable Urban Mobility plan published for public consultation

In line with the government’s commitment to shift to a more sustainable transport ecosystem, a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) has been developed for the Northern Harbour and Southern Harbour Regions.

These two regions which are collectively referred to as the Valletta Region incorporate 27 local councils: Birgu, Birkirkara, Bormla, Fgura, Floriana, Gżira, Ħamrun, Senglea, Kalkara, Luqa, Marsa, Msida, Paola, Pembroke, Pietà, Qormi, Saint Julian’s, San Ġwann, Sliema, Santa Luċija, Santa Venera, Swieqi, Ta’ Xbiex, Tarxien, Valletta, Xgħajra, and Żabbar.

This plan included stakeholder engagement through which the transport challenges were identified, and a set of measures were developed.

Following extensive consultation with the local councils concerned, inter-governmental entities and stakeholders, the second phase was initiated where the drafted measures have been revisited following the feedback received and new data and studies that have now become available.

The Valletta SUMP aims to provide specific, tried and tested solutions to improve the mobility system of the region; encourage both residents and visitors to use sustainable modes of transport; improve the quality of life; reduce transport emissions and make the region more attractive.

This SUMP includes a number of measures grouped into four strategic objectives, which aim to shift towards more sustainable mobility solutions in the region.

The public is now being invited to submit feedback on the measures being proposed, by the 7th December 2022, by following the link:

This exercise forms part of a larger project where a Sustainable Urban Mobility plan will be developed for each of the remaining Regions in Malta and Gozo.
