THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR CITIZENSHIP AND COMMUNITIES: Works on Maria Re?ina Primary library at final stages – refurbishment funded by Residency Malta

Works on the primary school’s library at Mosta’s Maria Regina College are well underway. With funds donated by Residency Malta Agency, the school is upgrading its learning area, intending to improve ambience as well as the quality of its literacy tools.

The library refurbishment project is costing €25,000. Works that started in June include the redecoration of walls, the installation of parquet flooring, new LED lighting panels and oak units that will house new fiction titles as well as fact and reference books in both Maltese and English.

“The new library will benefit the whole school population of over 300 students aged between 8 and 10,” said Patrick Decelis, Head of Maria Regina College Network. “The lending library, run by members of the school council, will boast a dedicated room where the love of books is encouraged and promoted via various reading and creative writing initiatives like writing scripts and poems, and journal keeping. The library upgrade will enable us to also organise storytelling sessions, puppet shows, paired reading and buddy reading sessions. Our intention is also to invite authors to talk about their books and encourage students to read and write. The generous donation by Residency Malta Agency, for which we are thankful, will go a long way in helping us reach our goals,” added Mr Decelis.

Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Communities Alex Muscat emphasised that spending on education is one of the best investments the government can make, with returns reaped in so many areas of social development. “It is heartening to see children immerse themselves fully in books and the world of stories, fantasy and imagination while learning language and cognitive skills. It augurs well for their future and that of our society at large. We are happy that our residency programme can contribute directly towards such high impact initiatives,” said the parliamentary secretary.

“Residency Malta Agency’s values converge towards ultimate aims that benefit Maltese society,” said Charles Mizzi, Chief Executive Officer of Residency Malta Agency. “By divesting funds from revenue generated via our residency programmes, to projects with tangible impacts, we believe we are making a material contribution towards our community at large.”
