Valletta: A boat carrying 51 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean recently, leaving 50 people missing while one survivor was rescued and taken to a hospital in Malta, according to local media reports.
According to Nam News Network, the lone survivor was rescued by a merchant ship after clinging to the wreckage and was subsequently transported to a Maltese hospital for medical treatment. The survivor recounted that the ill-fated boat had departed from Libya on a Thursday and met with disaster the following day.
Following the capsizing, search and rescue operations were promptly initiated, but the fate of the remaining 50 passengers remains uncertain. The incident adds to the growing number of casualties in the Mediterranean this year.
Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicated that 14 people have either gone missing or been confirmed dead in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year. The total number of deaths and disappearances along this perilous route reached 1,873
in 2024.
