Abbas Pushes for Hamas to Relinquish Control of Gaza Amid Ceasefire Talks

Amman: Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has declared that Hamas cannot govern post-war Gaza and must hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority (PA). This statement followed a meeting with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in Amman. Abbas emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of captives on both sides, and a full Israeli withdrawal to allow the PA to take control of Gaza with both Arab and international support. He also called for a halt to the expansion of West Bank settlements.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, these demands from Abbas mirror those he made in April, which were rejected by Hamas. The longstanding rift between the two factions dates back to the 2006 elections when Hamas won and subsequently seized control of Gaza from Fatah in 2007. Despite various reconciliation attempts, tensions remain high.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding a ceasefire, stating that indirect talks mediated by Qatar could lead to a breakthrough within a week. U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff, attending the FIFA Club World Cup final in the United States, conveyed hope following discussions with Qatari intermediaries. The proposed draft deal includes a 60-day truce, staged hostage releases, and partial Israeli troop withdrawals, with subsequent negotiations aimed at a permanent resolution to the ongoing 21-month conflict. Nonetheless, talks are currently stalled due to Israel’s reluctance to commit to a full withdrawal.

A recent poll by Channel 12 revealed that 75% of Israelis support a deal that would end the offensive in exchange for the release of all hostages.
