Coordinated Efforts Underway to Support Victims of Landslide in Gofa Zone : Chief Administrator


Addis Ababa: Providing supporting to the victims of Gozdi Kebele of Gofa Zone is being carried out in coordinated manner by establishing technical committee, according to Chief Administrator of Southern Ethiopia Region, Tilahun Kebede.

In a media briefing he gave today, the chief administrator recalled that in the life saving effort to rescue members of two families in the first landslide, another landslide has claimed the lives many people.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, along with First Lady Zinash Tayachew, former Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, and other high-ranking officials visited the affected area to offer condolences and assistance to the displaced and bereaved.

According to the chief administrator, some 500 people who were at risk of landslide in Gofa Zone have been resettled to safe area.

Though the rainy season made the operation of emergency assistance very difficult, relocating vulnerable people have been achieved, he said.

He added that 10 persons have been rescued from the landslide a
nd they are being treated at sawla Hospital.

The Technical committee is working on ways of rehabilitating more than 6,000 vulnerable citizens in sustainable manner , he indicated.

Noting the accident caused heartbreaking situation, including the children who lost their families, he pointed out works are being carried out to provide short term support and permanently rehabilitate them.

The chief administrator expressed his gratitude for the assistance and partnership being extended to the affected citizens in Gofa Zone. .

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has declared a three-day national mourning day beginning today to commemorate the lives lost by the landslide in Gofa Zone of Southern Ethiopia.
