Ethiopia Repatriates Over 700 Citizens from Myanmar: Foreign Ministry

Addis Ababa: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the successful repatriation of over 700 Ethiopians from Myanmar. These citizens were previously living under challenging circumstances.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, briefed journalists on the ministry’s political, economic, and citizen-focused diplomatic activities. He highlighted Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos’s participation in the 3rd EU-African Union Ministerial Meeting in Brussels, Belgium, where discussions covered infrastructure, climate change, renewable energy, private sector involvement, cybersecurity, and sustainable development.

On the meeting’s sidelines, Foreign Minister Gedion engaged with EU member state officials to discuss Ethiopia’s national interests and strengthen bilateral relations. The spokesperson also noted Addis Ababa’s role as a diplomatic hub, hosting significant events such as ETEX 2025, the ILO Africa Regional Meeting, the ID4Africa Conference, IGAD meetings, the African Insurance Organization Conference, and the Ethiopia Finance Forum, positioning it as a growing center for conference tourism.

Ambassador Nebiat emphasized the ongoing efforts to repatriate Ethiopians from Myanmar, highlighting the importance of citizen-centered diplomacy. He urged the public to aid in preventing illegal human trafficking by exposing fraudulent activities. The government collaborates with international organizations like INTERPOL to hold accountable those who deceive citizens with false employment and education opportunities abroad.
