Ethiopia Uniquely Positioned to Leverage Solar Energy, Become Energy Hub: Ministry of Water & Energy


Nairobi: Ethiopia is uniquely positioned to leverage solar energy not only to meet domestic needs but also to become an energy hub, State Minister of Water and Energy Sultan Welle said. Ethiopia and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) have signed Solar Mini-Grid and Solar Park projects in Addis Ababa today.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, during the occasion, State Minister of Water and Energy Sultan Welle emphasized that energy is the driver of growth for any country, highlighting that Ethiopia has prioritized the proper exploitation of its energy sector. The State Minister also stressed the importance of development partners in supporting the country’s priority areas in solar energy development and transformation.



The State Minister further stated that the agreed initiatives showcase Ethiopia’s commitment to harnessing solar power, improving rural electrification, and creating opportunities for socio-economic development. “Our collaborations with the ISA and partner organizations will undoubtedly accelerate Ethiopia’s energy transition, foster innovation, and stimulate investments,” he affirmed.



With an abundance of solar resources, Sultan highlighted Ethiopia’s unique position to leverage solar energy to meet domestic needs and become an energy hub. He also noted Ethiopia’s dedication to fostering an enabling environment for sustainable energy projects, empowering local communities, and ensuring clean energy access for all Ethiopians.



Director General of the International Solar Alliance, Ashish Khanna, remarked that the ISA is primarily supporting Ethiopia in agriculture and mini-grid development in rural areas, providing capacity-building training, and offering policy regulatory support. The Director General also mentioned that the ISA is committed to supporting Ethiopia’s solar transformation based on the government’s priorities.
