GERD Completion Celebrated as Symbol of Regional Cooperation: Tibor Nagy

Addis ababa: The former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Tibor Nagy, has advocated for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to be seen as a catalyst for shared regional opportunity rather than a threat. In a recent post on his X account, Nagy emphasized the importance of a regional agreement, celebrating the completion of the dam’s construction as a proud moment for Ethiopians despite numerous challenges.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, addressing parliament on Thursday, announced the completion of the GERD and preparations for its official inauguration. He reassured neighboring countries, particularly Egypt and Sudan, that the dam represents a shared opportunity for regional cooperation and mutual benefit, rather than a threat.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the energy produced by GERD will benefit the entire region, describing it as a blessing for both Egypt and Sudan. He reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to cooperating wit
h its Egyptian counterparts, emphasizing that there are no ill intentions towards harming Egypt or Sudan.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister invited the governments and people of Egypt, Sudan, and all Nile Basin nations to participate in the celebration of Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam inauguration in September. The GERD, recognized as Africa’s largest hydroelectric plant, stands as a significant source of national pride for Ethiopians.
