Governor Prioritizes Expansion Of Gilgil Sub County Hospital

Nakuru county governor Susan Kihika has promised to prioritize expansion of the Gilgil Sub County hospital, even as area residents gave nod to affordable housing project on the hospital’s land.

The hospital, that serves residents of Nakuru and parts of Nyandarua county has in the past been cited for gross shortage of staff.

While making a routine tour of the facility, Kihika noted that a new structure will be constructed at the facility to create more rooms, alongside the envisioned 2, 000 affordable housing units.

‘The affordable Housing Project will be initiated alongside a new structure to upgrade this hospital to a level 5 facility, in addition to the construction of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus,’ the governor noted, during a public participation exercise at the hospital’s ground that sought the resident’s endorsement of the housing project.

Kihika also promised to equip the hospital once the construction is completed, in addition to fencing off of the hospital land and getting it a
title deed.

The hospital is a high volume level four facility, conducting over 200 deliveries monthly, with a number of patients being an overflow from Naivasha and Nakuru, owing to its accessibility.

Additionally, the hospital manages the second highest number of mental health cases in the country.

At the same time, the governor acknowledged the substantial workload at the facility, while confirming availability of drugs at the hospital’s pharmacy that was well stocked and running.

The residents, who welcomed the move for the expansion of the facility, also gave their overwhelming support for the national government’s Affordable Housing Project, that will see 2, 000 units put up at near the facility.

However, the residents emphasized the need to employ local youths during execution of the project and also urged the governor to petition for tarmacking of roads around the facility for ease of accessibility.
