Turkana County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban areas management Peter Akono has called upon county residents to embrace the Kenya Informal Settlements Program (KISIP II) in Turkana County.
CECM Akono pointed out that the county government of Turkana is working on six informal settlements namely Nabute, Soweto, Carlifornia, Ngiitakito, Ng’inokakim and Lopiding.
The KISIP II Program aims at improving the living conditions of the residents of the six informal settlements and also enhancing security for the people living in those settlements. It will also provide title deeds to land owners thereby improving the economy of the county.
He said the programme will also address the issue of infrastructure development in terms of social economic development whereby through the program undertaken, drainages will be constructed, water accessibility will also be addressed and floodlights will be installed within the settlements.
Akono expressed his gratitude to the Nati
onal Government Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development for the resilience and support they have offered to this program in Turkana County.
The six settlements were supported by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development in conjunction with the county government of Turkana.
‘With the regards of his excellency the governor, Turkana County is indebted by the support from the national government,’ he added.
At the County level, efforts are aimed at land security especially for informal settlements. There are significant benefits that are going to accrue to the residences that this plan aims at.
CEC Akono urged the residents of Turkana County within the mentioned settlements to provide a peaceful working environment to the consultant and the team because this program is going to benefit the entire County.
He also pleaded with elected leaders, other key stakeholders including the community, youth and the NGOs to take this program as key in terms of the benefits o
ur people are going to get out of the program.
‘Let us give an enabling environment to the consultant because this is a program that is going to benefit the residents of Turkana County,’ he stressed.
Akono mentioned other plans undertaken for instance, the integrated and spatial plans in Katilu, Lokiriama and Kalobeyei.
He further said that the County is going to get six extra informal settlements under KISIP II in Kalobeyei, Kainuk, Lobokat, Kura in Kalokol ward, Kambi Mpya in Turkana North and Lejio-Maria in Kakuma.
He also appealed for more informal settlements from the mother Ministry of Lands, Public works, Housing and Urban Development in Turkwel, Kambi mawe, Lopur and Lorugum.
