Nakuru County produced 318 million litres of milk worth Sh13.9 billion last year, projecting to hit the Sh16 billion mark in three years, the County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Mr. Leonard Bor, has said.
‘This performance is revolutionary; it’s enormous, and it’s driven by an estimated population of 466,800 heads of cattle, thus placing Nakuru as a giant in the dairy sector across the country,’ said Bor.
Speaking during this year’s World Milk Day at Keringet KCSeeds Dairy Plant in Kuresoi South Sub-County, Bor highlighted the vital role milk played in global nutrition and community livelihoods.
‘It is projected that the county’s dairy industry is going to experience strategic growth, with an increase of 22 per cent in the value of raw milk production in the next three years, to surpass 16 billion shillings,’ he said.
He added that World Milk Day was meant to demystify diverse happenings in the dairy sub-sector, even as it enlightens the masses on the crucial role played by milk in
attaining healthy diets, sustainable food production, and prosperity at the community level.
Key among the plans, the officials announced, is the unveiling of ambitious strategies to boost the dairy industry.
‘At least 120,212 families are directly involved in the entire process of dairy farming, supporting over 500,000 livelihoods in Nakuru County alone,’ he said.
Over 40 exhibitors participated in Nakuru County World Milk Day, where they shared knowledge and showcased various innovations in dairy farming.
As Nakuru County charts a course towards a thriving dairy future, initiatives such as the World Milk Day celebration serve as catalysts for innovation, collaboration, and progress.
With concerted efforts and strategic interventions, Nakuru aims to unlock the full potential of her dairy industry to foster a prosperous future for residents.
