National Government Allocates Sh10 Billion for Flood Mitigation in Kenyan Counties

Nairobi – The national government of Kenya has released Sh10 billion to aid in flood mitigation efforts across the country, announced East Africa Community, ASAL, and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza. This significant financial support is directed towards 39 counties that have been severely impacted by devastating floods, which have resulted in substantial damage to infrastructure and homes, and claimed over 120 lives.

According to Kenya News Agency, this decision followed a Cabinet meeting on Monday, with the funds scheduled to be disbursed to the affected counties by Friday. She made this announcement at Mutyambua market while visiting to offer condolences to families affected by a recent tragedy at river Muuoni, where seven people lost their lives crossing the flooded river.

Malonza emphasized the joint responsibility of national and county governments in alleviating the suffering caused by floods. She assured the provision of necessary resources, including boats or helicopters, for rescue and relief operations. Addressing the need for infrastructure development, she promised to discuss the construction of a bridge over river Muuoni with Roads Cabinet Secretary Onesimus Murkomen, responding to the urgent appeal from the residents of Mbitini.

The Cabinet Secretary also issued a stern warning to parents and residents against crossing flooded rivers, highlighting the legal consequences for those who disregard this advice. To further support the affected communities, the national government has donated 600 bags of rice and 320 bags of beans to residents of Mutyambua, with another consignment of food aid scheduled for delivery next week.

On the issue of compensation for families affected by the floods, Malonza informed that current legislation does not permit government compensation. However, she committed to exploring ways to assist, especially in supporting school-going children from the bereaved families.

Makueni County, one of the affected areas, currently has five evacuation camps hosting over 800 displaced people. During the same event, Health Chief Administrative Secretary James Mbaluka called for unified efforts among all leaders to alleviate the suffering of affected individuals. He urged local Members of Parliament to prioritize the allocation of funds for key projects like the tarmacking of the Emali-Ukia Road in the county.

The occasion was also attended by notable figures including Tana Athi chairperson Regina Ndambuki, Acting County Commissioner Moses Gicharu, and members of the county security team.
