New york: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas emphasized the global commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause during the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This event, observed annually, reaffirms the international community’s dedication to the rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination, freedom, and independence.
According to Union of OIC News Agencies, President Abbas expressed gratitude to the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People for its crucial role in garnering international support for Palestine. He also thanked global leaders who sent messages of solidarity. The President highlighted the challenges faced by Palestinians, including the ongoing effects of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and violations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem under continued occupation.
President Abbas acknowledged the efforts of the Arab-Islamic Committee, chaired by Saudi Arabia, in forming an internatio
nal coalition with the European Union and Norway to implement a two-state solution. This coalition led to a high-level international conference focused on resolving the Palestinian question. The conference, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, resulted in the adoption of the New York Declaration, taking steps towards establishing a sovereign Palestinian state and achieving peace in the region.
He also commended international recognition of the State of Palestine by numerous countries, stating that 160 nations now recognize Palestine. President Abbas urged countries yet to recognize Palestine to do so, emphasizing that such recognition aligns with international law. He reiterated Palestine’s recognition of Israel since 1993 and called for an end to the illegal occupation.
Expressing gratitude, President Abbas thanked countries and institutions supporting Palestinian rights and condemning the conflict in Gaza. He acknowledged Algeria’s role in the UN Security Council and the humanitarian aid provided by var
ious nations and the United Nations, particularly UNRWA. He emphasized the importance of empowering the Palestinian Authority to serve the people effectively.
The President welcomed mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. He reiterated Palestine’s support for President Trump’s peace plan, adopted by the UN Security Council, which calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the integration of its institutions with the Palestinian Authority.
President Abbas rejected statements by Israeli officials that incite racism and undermine the two-state solution. He called on the United Nations to halt settlement expansion and other unilateral actions that threaten peace prospects. The President commended global protests supporting Palestinian rights and emphasized Palestine’s commitment to reforms for a democratic state.
He concluded by assuring Palestinians of their just cause and the support of the international community. President Abbas emphasized
that the path to freedom is closer than ever, and the independence of the State of Palestine will be realized through steadfastness and international legitimacy.
