President Sahle Work Confers with World Muslim League Secretary General

President Sahle Work Zewde held a discussion with the Secretary General of the World Muslim League Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa in her office today.

During the occasion, they discussed the possibility of strengthening Ethiopia’s relations with Arab countries.

It is to be recalled that the Secretary General, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa had a discussion with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen yesterday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the discussion focused on issues of mutual interest including promoting religious tolerance and peace.

During the meeting, Demeke highlighted Ethiopia’s place in Islam’s history.

He said that Ethiopia is home to three UNESCO-inscribed Islamic heritage sites including the Holy City of Harar, Al Nejashi Mosque, Sof Omar Caves as well as other historical mosques and documents.

The Secretary-General, on his part, commended Ethiopia’s long history of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

He recalled the noteworthy role of Ethiopia’s King Nejashi for granting sanctuary to Muslim exiles that escaped the persecution of the Quraysh.
