PRESS RELEASE BY THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION General Election – March, 2022

Notice regarding voting by persons who are COVID-19 positive or in mandatory quarantine related to COVID-19

The Electoral Commission notifies that special arrangements are being put in place so that all those persons who are found to be COVID-19 positive or are in mandatory quarantine related to COVID-19 between the 12th March and the 25th March 2022, may exercise their right to vote only in one of the special centres which are to be set up for this purpose.

Special Voting Centres

These centres have been set up with the approval of the health authorities so that these voters may exercise their right to vote without any problems or safety issues for themselves and the general public. This is also being done as a precautionary measure to ensure that the voting process takes place with minimal health hazards for everyone.

For this reason, and as required by the General Elections Act, the Electoral Commission shall be receiving from the Superintendence of Public Health a list with the details of these persons as from Saturday, 12th March 2022 and up to 9pm on the 25th March 2022.

It is of utmost importance that every voter ONLY casts their vote in the centre they will be advised to attend and NOT in the polling station indicated on their Voting Document. Every voter who is COVID-19 positive or is in mandatory quarantine between the 12th March and the 26th March 2022 (Polling Day) shall ONLY be allowed to vote in the centres set up for this purpose and nowhere else.

Voters who choose to benefit from early release from quarantine will still be required to vote ONLY in the centres specifically set-up for this purpose and nowhere else.

Voters who are expected to vote in these centres shall be receiving instructions as to which centre they should attend to cast their vote on Polling Day.

Possibility of early voting

Persons who are on the list issued by the Superintendent of Public Health as from the 12th March, and who wish to vote one week prior to the actual Polling Day, may apply for advanced voting on Saturday, 19th March 2022. They may do this by presenting a declaration in this regard to the Electoral Commission.

This declaration is to be made by sending an e-mail on covid-19.electoral@gov.mt, with the voter declaring their intention to avail themselves of the opportunity for voting in advance on the 19th March 2022. The public is informed that the legal deadline for the submission of such a declaration expires at noon of Friday, 18th March 2022.

Persons who are currently abroad and must quarantine upon arrival in Malta

Those persons who are currently abroad and will be travelling to Malta to vote, are to ensure that they make the necessary preparations in a timely manner, and plan their travel arrangements in such a way as to ensure that they can collect their Voting Document by the deadline allowed by law, and also to be able to make the necessary contacts with the health authorities with regard to any quarantine period that may be required, which period shall start to apply upon their arrival in Malta. It is to be noted that anyone who does not collect their voting document by midnight of Thursday, 24th March 2022, or is COVID-19 positive or in mandatory quarantine and is not included in the list that the Superintendent of Public Health forwards to the Electoral Commission by Friday, 25thMarch 2022 at 9.00pm, cannot exercise their right to vote.
