Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Pedro Agramunt at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs where they discussed the current priorities and challenges within the Council of Europe.

Minister Vella underscored the valuable contributions of the Council of Europe to the European Community and how the Council of Europe served as the blueprint for the foundation of the European Union itself.

Pedro Agramunt congratulated Malta on assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union last January. In particular, Agramunt commended the priorities of the Maltese Presidency which are in line with the Council of Europe’s own priorities.

The current situation in the Mediterranean, developments in the crisis in Libya, as well as elements of instability in Europe and in the Mediterranean region, notably migration, xenophobia and terrorism, were also discussed.

At the end of the meeting, Pedro Agramunt and Minister Vella asserted the motto of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, #NoHateNoFear, in the fight against radicalisation and terrorism.
