PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR HOME AFFAIRS AND NATIONAL SECURITY: More systematic checks on EU citizens including Maltese entering or leaving Malta to areas outside Schengen

As from today, the Maltese immigration authorities will be implementing systematic checks on all EU citizens, including Maltese nationals, entering Malta from airports and seaports outside the Schengen area, or leaving Malta towards such destinations. These checks are being carried out in line with the recent amendments to the Schengen Borders Code, which are now in force in all States forming part of the Schengen area.

Maltese and other EU citizens will thereby undergo a systematic border check when flying to and from airports in the United Kingdom and airports outside the EU and the Schengen area, such as Istanbul, Moscow, Tripoli and Tunis.

Such checks are being carried out for enhanced security reasons, following the Paris attacks of November 2015 and to address the threat from foreign terrorist fighters.
