Malta is currently hosting a meeting of the Scientific Advice Working Party organised by the Medicines Authority as part of the Maltese Presidency.

In her opening address, Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties Helena Dalli described the integrated views provided by the scientific advice working party as an important component of the regulatory system.

Minister Dalli said that through this forum, the boundaries of regulatory sciences are pushed to enable access to innovative medicines and treatments.

Dr Dalli spoke about the role of the Malta Medicines Authority in providing scientific advice procedures at a National Level. The Minister explained how over the past years, the Authority has successfully delivered advice, ranging from Orphan Medicinal products to be registered under exceptional circumstances, to products to be registered under the Well established use.

Minister Dalli remarked how the Malta Medicines Authority is investing 10% of its budget in training and development of employees. In addition, 30% of staff members are conducting research at Masters and Doctorate level, with areas of specialisations that are highly-relevant to this working party.

In this regard, Dr Dalli endorsed Malta’s participation in such fora, particularly for this working party, which are also benefiting the European Network.
