PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, THE ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE – Minister Jose Herrera meets with EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias CaAete

Today, Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change Dr Jose Herrera met with EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias CaAete, where they discussed Malta’s Presidency priorities regarding Climate Change.

Minister Herrera explained that nowadays the issue of climate change has a very important international dimension and there is general consensus that a collective effort is needed to reduce emissions drastically. This view has been encapsulated in the Paris Agreement which was finally ratified in November. He said that this agreement sets very ambitious targets which by far and large have been embraced universally especially by the European Union.

Minister Herrera continued that since the European Union has always prided itself as being a forerunner in this regard, the time is now ripe for the European Union to consolidate its position as the prime mover when it comes to initiatives to try and combat climate change.

Amongst the most important dossiers this Presidency will have to face are those relating to Climate Change. In this regards I am referring to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), Non-ETS and Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) files explained Dr Herrera.

Minister Jose Herrera concluded that Malta will strive to register as much progress as possible concerning these important dossiers.
