PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Speaker An?lu Farrugia receives OSCE ODHIR Election Assessment Mission

Speaker of the House of Representatives Anglu Farrugia has this morning received a courtesy visit by an OSCE ODHIR Election Assessment Mission, led by Ambassador Jorge Fuentes. The two sides discussed various issues in connection with the upcoming general election.

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), in accordance with its mandate and following the Maltese Government’s invitation to ODIHR to observe the forthcoming general election, has deployed an OSCE Election Assessment Mission (EAM) until 10th June 2017.

An EAM is usually deployed to carry out election observations in OSCE participating States to assess the extent to which elections respect fundamental freedoms. They are characterized by equality, universality, political pluralism, confidence, transparency and accountability.

Ambassador Jorge Fuentes, who comes from Spain, was accompanied by Deputy Head of Mission and Political Analyst Mr Stefan Szwed, Campaign Finance Analyst Mr Jurij Toplak, Election Analyst Mr Manuel Sanchez de Nogues, and Legal Analyst Ms Anne Helene Marsoe. Clerk of the House Mr Ray Scicluna was also present.
