PRESS RELEASE BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITIES: Regional committees – another level of local government

The Northern Region launched a 3-year project called Y-Engage, aimed at the youths living within this region. This project is financed from funds given to this region through the Community Innovation Fund and aims to further connect youths together and involve them more in our society. Y-Engage will range from educational and awareness programmes to practical projects. This region will organise seminars to discuss themes such as the environment, history, culture, and tourism. Furthermore, there will also be sessions about cookery, child-minding and housekeeping, wooden sea kayak building, historic car restoration and building, and the building and conservation of rubble walls.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis said that we are living in a world largely based on technology and this educational project aims at bringing youths back in touch with a number of skills and trades of our ancestors which will be of great benefit.

Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Parnis said that the regional committees must be another level of local government and therefore this year they will be given for the first time a direct fund of more than Euros 3 million. Silvio Parnis said that the regional councils were already given a substantial part of their allocation. In fact, the 5 present regional councils were given the amount of Euros 1.3 million. This means an allocation of more than a quarter of a million euro for each region. The remaining amount, that of Euros 1.8 million will be given to the regions next June. Parliamentary Secretary Parnis concluded that by means of the Local Government Reform we will continue seeing a radical change within the regional councils because now they will have tangible powers for the good of our residents.
